Environmental data provides the basis for further CO2 reduction
Hansgrohe SE is the first manufacturer in the sanitation sector worldwide to present environmental life cycle assessments for its hand showers. In publishing the environmental impacts, the company is emphasising its focus on sustainability.
The environmental life cycle assessment depicts the "ecological footprint", which is the impact that a product makes on the environment, from its manufacture through to its recycling: how much CO2 is emitted and its impact on the greenhouse effect; how much energy and water consumption is placing a burden on natural resources. The data was calculated over the entire life cycle of the product. Hansgrohe is using this information to optimise its environmentally friendly production and gather suggestions for new product concepts.
All information from the environmental life cycle assessments is being made available to architects and building owners who wish to make their products more sustainable. So this information can also help eco-conscious consumers and building owners with decision-making.
Environmental life cycle assessment for hand showers
The world's first environmental life cycle assessment for hand showers forms part of what is known as the environmental product declaration (EPD) according to ISO 14025, which Hansgrohe commissioned from independent consultants. This provides detailed information about what impact the showers from the Croma 100 and Crometta 85 product ranges have on the consumption of resources and the greenhouse effect. All data relating to raw material extraction and energy production, manufacture, utilisation and disposal have been analysed with this in mind. Any transportation that took place has even been taken into consideration. The analyses were carried out by the Institute Bauen und Umwelt e. V. (Construction and Environment) (Freiburg).
The environmental life cycle assessment credits both product ranges with a CO2 output of 2.17 kg (Crometta) and 2.8 kg respectively over their entire life cycle. In comparison, burning just one litre of petrol releases 2.85 kg CO2, according to the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (Bayerisches Landesamt für Umwelt). We view the entire supply chain process as constituting the life cycle of the products – from raw material extraction, to utilisation, right through to disposal.
Within the sanitation sector, Hansgrohe SE is considered the pioneer of environmental protection. The company had already begun to develop water- and energy-saving products more than 30 years ago. Today, measurable sustainability targets are part of the company's business policy Thus environmental protection plays an active role in economic decisions. Environmental life cycle assessments, commencing with the establishment of the environmental impacts of showers from Schiltach, are now a systematic component of this strategy.
